A new case has emerged involving a Google Pixel 6A smartphone catching fire while charging overnight. The device reportedly ignited while connected to a third-party 45W charger intended for a Steam Deck console.
According to a post on Reddit by user "u/footymanageraddict," the phone was placed on a nightstand and began emitting a loud noise and strong odor. The user said the fire melted both the phone’s screen and protective case. Nearby bedsheets caught fire, and smoke from the incident reportedly led to throat irritation. The user also reported surface damage to a floor-mounted air conditioner placed next to the nightstand.
The incident reportedly took place after the user installed a Google-issued battery optimization update. The update had been released to manage battery performance and overheating issues that had previously been reported across the Pixel A-series lineup.
Google has not issued any public statement on the latest incident. Historically, similar cases led to the rollout of a software patch limiting battery performance after 400 charging cycles. In addition, Google offered free battery replacements for qualifying Pixel A devices. However, the Reddit user stated they could not access the replacement service due to the lack of a walk-in center in their area.
This latest incident adds to a series of overheating complaints involving the Pixel 6A. Industry analysts suggest users should monitor battery behavior closely, avoid overnight charging, and refrain from using third-party chargers not recommended by the manufacturer.
No injuries beyond minor smoke inhalation were reported. Google has yet to confirm whether an investigation is underway.
